If your new disk is smaller than the old, then :
- On the old disk you had only one partition, the disk image is thus too tall: You cannot restore!
- On the old disk you had several partitions, the partition to be restored is smaller than the size of the new disk: You can restore.
That you restore a partition, or all the old disk, there is no problem.
There will remain a piece of the disk not used.
If your new disk is not the same model / mark, and even if it is of the same size (exemple: 80 Go), then :
- The partition of the old disk took all space (80 Go), the number of blocks on the new disk is at least equal to old: you can restore.
- The partition to be restored did not take all space, you can restore.
- In the other cases, you cannot restore.
